POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION IN UK
: A DEGREE OF MASTERY
If you come to UK for postgraduate
studies you will not be alone : each year 17,000 students come here from
all over the world.
Students are attracted to British
universities by their excellent reputation in research and teaching. All
university departments are audited by the relevant Higher Education Funding
Council and by the UK research councils. They are also obliged to meet
stringent standards by professional bodies. Standards are high, not just
in teaching but in other facilities as well : libraries, computers, research
equipment and living accommodation. Students have not only an academic
tutor but also a personal tutor, a careers adviser and other members of
staff to help and guide them.

There are three main reasons
why students pursue British masters degrees :
-
Academic : the courses give a
detailed and professional understanding of the subject.
-
Duration : British masters degrees
are intensive and can generally be completed in a year whereas they take
two years elsewhere.
-
Career progression : a high proportion
of master's degrees are vocational, leading towards specific careers. Some
even provide a qualification which is recognised by a professional body.

The admissions procedure is tried
and tested. Given below are some useful tips to keep
in mind :
-
Application forms : The Education
Counselling Service of the British Council Division has its own specially
printed application forms which are acceptable to the majority of UK institutions.
Please use these forms and make sure that your contact details are clearly
marked to ensure a quick response.
-
Admission tests : For some courses.
eg Management, overseas students must sit the Graduate Management Aptitude
Test (GMAT). Other courses require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or
International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) scores. The British
Council regularly administers the IELTS test.
-
Work experience : A number of
professional and vocational courses require relevant work experience. For
instance many MBAs or masters courses in information studies require at
least a couple of years' work experience. These courses are for mature
students where the average age is 25 years and above.
-
Academic records : Transcripts
(official certificates) that set out previous academic qualifications are
crucial for your application. If the originals are not in English, copies
and a good English translation must be enclosed. If your undergraduate
qualification or university is unknown to the admissions tutor, the British
Council would be able to advise. Academic references are absolutely crucial
to your application and need to be arranged as early as possible.
-
Money matters : While there are
a small number of scholarships for postgraduates from India, most students
would have to pay for their studies. If the course is being sponsored by
an employer, perhaps the best prospective candidates can do is to communicate
clearly to their sponsors the dates and importance of application deadlines.
-
Start early : Provided everything
is in order - that is transcripts, references, English test results and
GMAT or GRE scores as required - an early application will not only help
to ensure a place but will also give suitable candidates the time and opportunity
to apply for available scholarships.
