Two of  Britains quality system that are most likely to be of interest to international students are the research assessment exercise and the assessment of the quality of teaching. Both these systems focus on individual subjects and or programmes of study and offer judgements on quality in the form of ratings. The assessment method used for both is peer review by the specialists of high standing in their subjects.

Assessments of the quality of teaching

British higher education institution are free to decide their own aims and objectives. The quality of education is therefore assessed, by subject, against the aims and objectives set by the subject provider. This fitness-for-purpose approach measures the extent to which the university and college provider is successful in acheiving the aims and objectives it has set for itself.

The six broad aspects of provision considered during quality assessments are :

  • Curriculum design, content and organization
  • Teaching, learning and assessment
  • Student progression and achievement
  • Student support & guidance
  • Learning resources ( eg. Information technology, laboratories, equipment, libraries etc.)
  • Quality assurance and enhancement
